Flags in Missouri at Half-Staff

From what I have seen many times citizens don't know why flags are at half-staff at Missouri's State facilities. It is often to honor fallen soldiers/Marines or other men/women that have fallen in service to the state of Missouri.

If you see the flags at half-staff and wonder why, a good place to look is the Governor's Newsroom Archives.

This year alone, the Governor has ordered flags at half-staff 20 times.

Threats from the Press

Maybe you saw the story where Missouri's Governor tried to ban cell phones from a news conference.

I would probably not be popular with the press, but I think I would have just told those that threatened to boycott that they could go ahead and leave and that a video of the news conference would be posted to the Internet that they could view if they wanted.

Although as Janese Heavin mentions, she would have been happy with the others going away, she would have ventured in and had an exclusive.

Cold

It is -1 here at the moment, which is cold, but once you look at what those further north are having to deal with, it doesn't seem as bad.

Prison Brews

On April 10th, I posted about Prison Brews, a new brewery and restaurant that has opened in Jefferson City at 305 Ash St.



I found the information that my wife had picked up about their Beer, but you can also find the information on what looks to be their official website. Looks like they do need to update the hours of operation they have listed.

I know Bob, the owner, had stated that they had not done any advertising. When we were there the place was pretty well packed. The service was not that great, but as it was their fourth day of being open, they were probably not prepared for the crowd. Our appetizer came after we got our food. Although I said the service was not that great, I have to say that there was a kid taking care of drinks and dishes that was doing a great job. I mentioned it to Bob on the way out and he went over and told the kid who said thank you as he walked by headed back to the kitchen.

I'll definitely give the place another chance.

I noticed that the Missouri Department of Mental Health started a Blog back in June.  They have chosen to host their blog on TypePad.

The Missouri Senate started using Blogger for their blog in March of 2006.

If the Missouri House would decide to follow suit, they will need to follow a different naming convention than the Senate as MissouriHouse.blogspot.com is already taken by someone trying to sell a house in Brookfield, Missouri for $6,400.

The Missouri State Employees' Retirement System is also on Blogger with their MOSERS Rumor Central blog.

Tornado Warnings

There are tornado warnings in adjacent counties. The sirens are going off in our city, which makes it hard to sleep as I was trying to do.

EAS has taken over the TV a couple of times, but each time there were no announcements coming through. That is handy. About as good as the PA system in the building where I work.

Power Outages

With the Ice came a lot of power outages, which needs lots of power company trucks to get it back online.

Governor Blunt's Campaign is paying me. Well, Potentially.

Since the incumbent Governor's campaign is utilizing Google's Adsense and I posted about his recent appointments, it apparently picked up that it would be a likely place for their ad to appear. As I can make money via Adsense ads on my site (very little in my case, such as today it was a penny), I could indirectly get paid for advertising for the Governor.

Hey I'll take the money and let people make up their own mind on who they want to vote for.

Although if one utilizing Adsense truly wanted to keep an ad from displaying on their site they can configure Adsense not to diplay it.

New Chief of Staff, New Acting Director

On Tuesday, the Governor of Missouri, Matt Blunt, named the Director of Revenue, Trish Vincent, as his new Chief of Staff, and on Wednesday a Division Director within the Department of Revenue, Julie A. Allen, was named as the Acting Director of Revenue.

Revoked Sales Tax Licesnse

The Missouri Department of Revenue put up a page today that allows one to search for businesses that have had their sales tax license revoked.

I would guess that the hope is similar to that of the deadbeat dad lists that have popped up over the years. Basically shame those owing money into paying, so that they can get their name removed from the list. We'll see how it goes.

Murder close to home

There have been 2 murders in the last 3 days in our small community. The latest was last night and literally took place just blocks from where I live. Kind of sad. The ex-husband of a woman drove to his ex-wife's house and shot and killed her. This morning he took his own life.

Not the kind of newsworthy stuff you want your community in the news for.

Brown University's 7th annual report on State and Federal E-Government in the United States, 2007 is available.

I was sad to see Missouri (http://www.mo.gov) drop from 20th to 22nd.

Some of the sites like the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the Missouri Department of Revenue, the Missouri Department of Conservation, and the Missouri Department of Social Services are a few of the more frequented sites in the Missouri state government webspace.

Wipers and Lights

Did you realize that in Missouri if conditions require that you use your windshield wipers that you must also use your lights?

"When lighted lamps are required" means at any time from a half-hour after sunset to a half-hour before sunrise and at any other time when there is not sufficient light to render clearly discernible persons and vehicles on the highway at a distance of five hundred feet ahead. Lighted lamps shall also be required any time the weather conditions require usage of the motor vehicle's windshield wipers to operate the vehicle in a careful and prudent manner as defined in section 304.012, RSMo. The provisions of this section shall be interpreted to require lighted lamps during periods of fog even if usage of the windshield wipers is not necessary to operate the vehicle in a careful and prudent manner.
