I found several things pertaining to the error message in the event log regarding my Group Policy issue.

Description: Windows cannot access the file gpt.ini for GPO CN={31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9},CN=Policies,CN=System,DC=domainname,DC=com . The file must be present at the location <\\domainname.com\sysvol\domainname.com\Policies\{31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984 F9}\gpt.ini>. (Error_Message). Group Policy processing aborted.
Step 3 of Article 887303 seemed to do the trick to fix my issue.
Simply set the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service to start automatically and went ahead and fired it up. After doing so, I went to a command prompt and did a gpupdate and all was well, the Group Policies came across.
