Stats

I have been trying to figure out if I want to stick with SiteMeter or go with Google Analytics for stats, so what do I get today, but an invitation to join the Reinvigorate private beta.

More choices. It does not appear that I get the same results with the other two, so it will be interesting to see if this one agrees with either of them.

I guess I'll take Reinvigorate for a spin to see what it has to offer.

It is initially launching with 28 reports.

So what do you prefer for site stats?

Video Stats

It seems like more and more video sites are showing rankings on videos along with ratings, comments, etc..

Dave has several on You Tube. I noticed that some have a "More Stats" link. I am surprised that some popular ones show few or no links to them.

Link to Video.

Of course, one of the things about the Internet is that a reasonably unknown kid can now get as much exposure as an individual that is well known.

Of course, the demographics of those looking for Bryan Adams "Heaven" video and those watching Mia Rose sing "Heaven" are probably different, it is still interesting to see that the Bryan Adams video posted by Ivan back on May 21st, 2006, has so many fewer hits than the version added by Mia Rose on January 7th, 2007. It would not surprise me if her video has actually helped his.

I would say that the demographics of those seeing Mia Rose's video is probably much different than those that would be looking for the Bryan Adams video. It would not surprise me at this point if her video has helped the popularity of the Bryan Adams video.

Crazy People

Okay. Where do you find the first person to try doing something like this?

Commercial

VW has come up with a pretty handy commercial. :-)

Oops.

The message I got when loading Google Reader today.

It is working now.

Photo Blog Picture Display Method

As Photo-Weblog.com currently lists only having 44 members, I am guessing it is either new, people don't like it, or people don't know about it. The 10MB limit is a pretty low limit even for a free account. Anyway I like the way the photos display.

Follow the link to Marco's Photo Album and then click on a picture to see what I am referring to. If you hover over the upper left or upper right it will allow you to click to go to the previous or next photo if there is one.

Lexus Parking

After watching the self-parking Lexus clip from Winding Road, it appears that there is a bit more involved in the process of self-parking a Lexus than what you see in the commercial.

Tax Deadline

It appears that many states are following the IRS and changing their state's tax deadline to the 17th this year.

Our state will likely have a decision tomorrow on whether it will extend it to the 17th.

Firefox Gaining

From the stats for this site last month it looks like FireFox is doing pretty well for itself.

Microsoft Office OneNote 2007

I got my OneNote upgraded to 2007.

I also got the 2007 Microsoft Office Add-in: Microsoft Save as PDF or XPS.

2nd Life

Nice boat Sam. I stopped by, but no one was around.

I traveled around Second Life a bit, but not much of a virtual person. I might go out and check out an event sometime or something, but you probably won't find me in the virtual world to much.

Microsoft Private Folder and Desktop Search

Microsoft pulled the Microsoft Private Folder some time ago, but a number of people had already downloaded it. I did notice that Windows Desktop Search results can end up listing files from the Private Folder. I would imagine these files get indexed when the folder is unlocked.

The content of the file is still not visible even in the preview pain if the folder is locked, but the information is evidently available within the index as it does list the files in which your search term is found, which may not be a desired result.

So, who will be the first to go into Second Life and in their virtual life fire up a computer and log into Second Life? Hmm, would they call that Third Life?

Software Giveaway

Have you seen this one?

Giveaway of the Day.

Excerpt of what they are about:

Welcome to Giveaway of the day project, the new initiative in the software distribution world! Every day we offer for FREE licensed software you’d have to buy otherwise!

Our new initiative, Giveaway of the day, is finally open to its visitors and ready to present hot software titles and best software authors from all over the world. For game giveaways check out Game Giveaway of the Day.We wish you a Happy Giveaway!

Giveaway of the day is a win-win solution for both publishers and clients
The idea behind this initiative is that many sites and publishers offer trial downloads; but only we offer giveaway downloads. What does that mean?

Basically, every day we nominate one software title that will be a Giveaway title of that day. The software will be available for download for 24 hours (or more, if agreed by software publisher) and that software will be absolutely free. That means - not a trial, not a limited version - but a registered and legal version of the software will be free for our visitors*.

Stumble Upon

I ran across Stumble Upon today and I can't say from a brief glance that I totally get it. Looks like one of those that you almost need to experience to get the whole gist of it.

Excerpt:

Discover the new world

No more keyword searches - just great videos! Stumble Video automatically finds and plays videos that match your interests. All you have to do is press Stumble! and rate the videos you watch. Stumble Video recommends great videos based on your ratings, and the ratings from other like-minded users. We'll find the best videos on the web and play more for you that match your interests. Have you tried Google Analytics?

Here is a mapping of the last 100 hits on bonj.blogspot.com.

Windows Live Writer

I do like the speed of Windows Live Writer.  The minus being that it is tied to a machine, yet if you only work with one machine and your blog host supports it, I would say give it a try.  Not only is the interface itself quick, the posts publish quickly.

I would like to see it support uploading images to Blogger, without the ftp server requirement, but does fine for posts without images.  As one would expect it does support uploading images to Windows Live Spaces.

Deleting Posts via Windows Live Writer

Caution:  This post discusses deleting files, although it does not involve changing your registry.  :-)  Hey, I had to add some kind of disclaimer.

Something you may want to be aware of when using Windows Live Writer.  If you move over and click to delete an old post, if you have the password saved and/or input the password when prompted after hitting delete, it will not only delete the post from the history of Windows Live Writer, it will delete the post from your blog as well.  If you have not saved the password and cancel when prompted, then it will simply delete it the local copy and your post on your blog should stay.  Another way to handle it, if you want to clean up your old posts from the PC is to go to your My Documents\My Weblog Posts\Recent Posts folder and delete the files with the .wpost extension.

Deleting Drafts is not such a big concern as they aren't sent to your blog to begin with, so deleting them via the interface is fine, but you can delete the .wpost files in My Documents\My Weblog Posts\Drafts if you prefer.

New Photoblog

Okay, I like a lot of the photoblogs that have a single picture displayed on the main page. Many use Photoshop to build their photoblog on hosted sites. I simply upload my photos to Blogger. It doesn't give a thumbnail archive as many of those sites do, but I have a photoblog setup with Blogger now that displays one photo per page. You don't get thumbnails, but if you don't want to flip through one by one you can click on the year, month, or specific post via the Blog Archive links. Let me know what you think. Do you like the layout of A Visual Life or MultiMegaPixel better? For that matter, which photoblog title do you prefer?

Corel PaintShop Pro Photo XI

I picked up a copy of Corel PaintShop Pro Photo XI. It is not Adobe Photoshop, but then again I am not a photographer, so it will be more than what I know what to do with. Now I need to get some time to learn it and take some more photos.

Labels

I have started to utilize labels since moving to the New Blogger. Right now I am going back through and adding labels to some previous posts.

Utah vs. Missouri

David Fletcher mentioned how Utah ranks against some of the other states per data from Alexa.

Although Utah ranks higher, I found it interesting to see how closely the patterns matched in regards to fluctuation for Utah and Missouri.

Today was the day

It has taken a while, but I finally had the option to move my sites to the new blogger. Yeah! I have a bit of work to do on it, but that is okay. I like the new blogger.

You know you are having a bad day if...

My wife's Uncle had a bad day.  It is one of those things that you just can't make up and have to somehow be able to go on by finding the humor in it.

You know you are having a bad day if..

  • It is the day of your mother's funeral
  • And after the funeral services you run into your ex-wif'es car in the parking lot as she is standing next to the car  (Okay, some may debate as to whether or not this is a bad thing, I guess it depends on your viewpoint and how well you get along with your ex)
  • Then, just minutes away from the cemetary, the procession of those making the hour and a half trip to attend the burial service witness you run over a cat, as it jumps out in front of you on a curvy country road

Light Box

I was sitting around thinking to myself I ought to go take some pictures to relax a bit. A bit of a stressful weekend putting in 700+ miles on Friday and Saturday to attend a family funeral. I really wasn't in the mood to get out though, but as I was sitting here catching up a bit on my blog reading I saw Andy Piper's post about building a light tent and that gave me a bit of photo time and kept me from having to get out of the house.

My version is not as eloquent, but you can see what I ended up with below. You can see more of my results on my photoblog.

Rest in Peace Winnie.

As a cold hard frost settled in this morning, life slipped away from my wife's grandmother. She was 84. She was battling cancer which had returned to take over her body. I would say it was her time. She had battled long and hard. I think she really held on to see family through the holidays. It was good that her mental state was such that she could enjoy it through the pain.

I read something about President Ford and how he did not force states to adopt the Right on Red (ROR) initiative, but was a supporter of it, and had an influence on it. I would have to say that is kind of how my wife's grandmother was. She did not force people to do things, but she had a big influence on her entire family. Just as my 16 year old takes Right on Red for granted, I believe their are many in the family that take a lot of the family values for granted, simply because it is the only way they have known it, but it was the influence of Grandma Winnie that instilled those values in the family.

She will definitley be missed, yet she will live on through her family.
